I was an 'only' child and cannot remember ever seeing my father during the war. Dad was in the 8th Army in North Africa and Italy.

When this strange man returned from the war I was 8. Mum had been in charge for all those years so when this 'Daddy' tried telling me what I should and should not do I resented it.

Having discussed this with many others of my age group, especially 'only' children, whose fathers were either in North Africa or the far East, I found that I was not alone in being unable to ever build a good relationship with my father.

The consequences of war are many and varied.
