I was six when war was declared, but my elder brother[RAF] and sister[ATS]and brother in law[RAF] were volunteers as soon as they could enlist. So i was surrounded by the services and took a great interest in what went on.Like all of my friends we were subjected to nightly air raids, and sat in our Morrison Table shelter and listened to the whistle of bombs coming down.My Brother in law was based at Dishforth attached to a Spitfire Sqadron. He told the family he would make a low level Fly past at 10-00am up and down Victoria Road West, Sure enough dead on time the sound of the Merlin Engine was heard and out we all went waving towels. He made two passes flicked his wings and was off.Unbeknown to us he thought he would fly between the high chimneys of Monkton Coke ovens where my father was manager. My father did not know of this and took the number of the plane and reported it to the RAF.Of course on landing back at base Jack was hauled up before the Co, and given a telling off. but" who reported me" he asked," your father In law "was the reply," Oh I see , Thank you Sir."
