Mid June, 1940; 10.00 p.m.;Air raid sirens. Mother hurries her two children out to the Anderson Shelter in the garden.Silence for a while then searchlights, engines drone on high, AA shells begin to explode, bombs whistle and emplosions.
In the midst of all this, the hessian blackout suddenly parts and LO !! my father, Sgt.Dean, not heard of since early June, appears in the gap. Goodness knows what state of mental turmoil my mother was in.
I never heard him say a word about his Dunkirk experiences during the next 19 years. He died at 59 when I was29 and my sister 27 years old.
