My Mother was in the A.T.S (Army Territorial Service) during the war. When the sirens went out one night, they had to evacuate people on the Somerton Road Belfast.
Men and women had to drop everything and run to the Antrim Road for safety.
When my Mum finished evacuating people to safety it was her job to then wait for the planes to go by. She was spotted and had to get down on the ground and crawl on her belly to try and reach safety.
Some girls needed the toilet urgently, the excitement and shock had caught them short.
No time for dignity, down caame the pants and business was done, into a wee hole in the ground. Grass was used instead of toilet paper.
All clear again, and back to the barracks.
Tea and coffee all round and stories of heroes of the night and how friends were spared to share another day.
This story is told by ...Lynda Heron, Dorothys daughter.
