Letters Home - August 1944 - Part Two
You Londoners think you have taken it, but you have had nothing compared with some of the French people. Many of them have lost everything- even their lives! And, being in the front line, have had no one to turn to in their distress. Only now are they emerging from the countryside with the few possessions they have managed to save. Its pitiable to watch their small handcarts being pushed back to a town that is just one complete mass of rubble and ruins.
Jerry uses anything for protection. I saw for myself the aftermath of a grim and bitter struggle for a Jerry occupied Monastery. He had spared no thought for the sanctity of such a place! — or the historical value of it! — or even the civilians sheltering there! One thought was given , and one only — a first class fortress.
On the roads, in the air one can see a never ending stream of equipment surging forward to the German frontier. Just the sign of this mass movement, gives the feeling that nothing will stop the allies- they are irrestible!
Bye-Bye for now,
Love to you all,
Ray
