After moving to Bayeaux to prepare for the invasion, we were joined by our 'sister' unit and during the evening their Sargeant came and woke me to say that their Captain was missing, so we arranged a search party to look for him. Being in this new location in France, we didn't know at all well, we must have searched for miles.
We eventually found the officer laid out behind the wall of a field some way from our camp with a bullet hole through his head and his revolver by the side of him. Whether he had been shot or he had shot himself, we never found out, other than it later turned out he had voiced his concern about being involved in the conflict, but nothing was ever decided, other than 'Killed in action'.
