My father was the Food Officer for Hadleigh and his Food Office was located in Hadleigh High Street during the war.
The ration books were kept at the Police Station and I remember Dad had to issue them each year not just to Hadleigh, but to the surrounding villages too. I remember getting a couple of days off school to accompany Dad on these rounds.
In 1941, Lord Woolton, the Minister for Food, came to visit my father in Hadleigh to see how a rural food office was going.
The interesting thing was, he wasn鈥檛 recognised by anyone in the town even though he was then one of the most important people in the country.
