We lived in Newton Road, at the top of Cavendish Street. We were three boys, two girls, my aunt, grandmother, and mother, all in three bedrooms. It was pretty damp. There was only a cold water tap. A bath was in the kitchen, where you could heat water up. You could hear mice scuttling round the coal house. That was also the only place our cat would have her kittens.
From the road we could get a good view of the docks. We could see the air raids pretty well. I would go in the pantry under the stairs. Or we would dive under a table. We had big wooden shutters at the back of the house to protect us from blasts.
I had to go to school at the other end of town. The liquid gas powered bus would take about an hour to get there.
One day there was a big metal container in our garden. We were happy to find that it was full of jelly beans and monkey nuts!
