I attended Ross Grammar between 1938-1942. There was a youth service corps, I worked in the WRVS canteen at St Mary's Hall. I also knitted for the forces and learnt first aid. After I left school I went to Gloucester College the when I was 18 I went to workin an office, for Gerald Stains Ltd that made hand tools for the war effort. In my spare time I joined the auxilary fire service. I worked two nights a week in the fire station in Ross where the Phoenix Theatre is now. Two of us would be on duty to answer the telephones we would ring a bell to fetch the firemen. I also was a member of the John Ambulance Brigade and became a member of the national hospital reserve because there was a shortage of nurses. I spent weekends working as an auxillary nurse at Ross cottage hospital. Michael Foot the MP had an accident and had to be nursed at Hereford. The American troops held dances at their camps, the bands were wonderful. There was a special committee that rounded up young girls to take them to dances.
