I was living in Thames Ditton, I was only 2 when the war broke out. I remember the doodlebugs going over. At our school we had a long shelter, it was quite dark down there. If we were at school during an air raid the teacher would take us down and carry on the lesson. When the air raids happened at night we used to take our pillows and blankets with us and sleep there. I remember being really scared of the spiders in the shelter, one old lady wouldn鈥檛 let us kill them. I was more scared of the spiders than the bombs.
Sometimes when there was an air raid we just went into the cupboard under the stairs. My mum would sing hymns and hope for the best. I also remember that if there was a bombing and you were not near a shelter you were supposed to just lie down on the lawn in your garden. Sweets were rationed, but the old lady in the sweet shop liked me and my brother and would keep extras by for us. When sweets finally came off the ration in the 50s the whole shop was cleared.
