Story from the memories of Mrs Woods of her uncle Charlie. He was well known in the area as Charlie Tartar, and didn't like to use the air raid shelters saying 'if Hitler wants me he knows where I am'. This was proved to be true when their house was bombed, and when the rest of the family came out of the shelter they discovered uncle Charlie in his nightshirt up a tree.
She also remembers on St George's Day they would pick the best of the rambling, red roses around uncle Charlie's door and using silver paper (saved from from his cigarette
packets) make buttonholes for all of the men in their street.
