We were living in the suburbs of Bristol, Earnest was in the auxillary fire sevice stationed at Bridewell. He was firefighting in all the blitzes. The events of the first blitz in September 1940, when Castle street, Mardons the printing firm and Bedminster were badly hit sticks in my mind. Looking across Bristol the sky was glowing red and where we walked there was a constant fall of flakes of burned paper, this continued for many hours.
The next morning my Mother was worried about Earnest and we went to Broad weir which was in ruins to look for him. On the site of where Salmonsonds the photgraphoic shop had been all was in ruins. We found him, tired and filthy.
My other brother Cliff was injured in a daylight raid on Parnalls aircraft factory at Yate.
I remember the troops returning from Dunkirk- French, Dutch, Polish, Belguim and of course the British troops all laying out in the park at Eastfield, many were in a pitiful condition with only the clothes.
they stood up in.
One day when I was a school, a lone bomber came in over Bristol and dropped a single bomb, which landed on two double decker buses in Broad weir, my brother attended the scene which was horrific. He told me that one of the passengers had to have his leg amputated to free him.
