The cousin of my grandmother, Mollie Harris (nee Sutton), John Jonas Arthur Sutton was a Wing Commander in the R.A.F during WW2. He was a squadron leader who was commanding a propaganda leaflet drop over Germany at the beginning of the War. A news cutting states that 'only a short time after Mr Chamberlain announced that we were at War with Germany, Wing Commander Sutton, then a squadron leader (at the age of 28) had charge of the first flight of R.A.F machines which went on a leaflet raid over Germany.' He was decorated by the King for his bravery and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
John Jonas Arthur Sutton lived at Ings House, Gomersal.
It may be interesting to note that when I was relating this very story to a girl I had known since high school called Beverly Wilson, she said, 'Wow, that's bizarre because my grandad's cousin is Neville Chamberlain.' Strange co-incidence!
