Questionnaire
Auntie — Catherine Maude Douglas — born 1925

Did you get evacuated?
No

Did you know anyone who was evacuated?
Not really; there were some children from Grangetown, but I was past the school age, being in the forces.

What did you do for fun?
Not a lot — read, knit, because, of course, particularly when we were on the barrage balloons, we worked 24 hours a day. We occasionally got tickets to go into the centre of London to see a show.

What music did you listen to?
It was mainly Vera Lynn on the radio and Bing Crossby.

What did you eat?
We had a lot of tinned food. Just ordinary food. We had to take turns on cooking and it depended what the cook wanted as to what we ate. We weren’t badly off for food.

Did you go out in the blackout?
Just if we were in London itself on these complementary tickets, as it wasn’t very pleasant — you spent most of your time in an air raid shelter.
