We were in a "safe" area. On the night of the Coventry raid a German bomber let its bombs off over Egham. Three bombs landed near our house. One of the bombs fell in the High Street and a friend's sister was killed, and two evacuees in a celler shelter were also killed. Our maths master was in charge of the messenger service of the Civil Defence(ie if the telephone communications broke down he organised people to act as runners). We had bicycles and motor bikes. Every third night we were on duty at the Council offices, and slept there.
In 1944, after D-Day, I was on duty, when a German Aircraft landed a few miles away. It turned out to be one of the first "Doodlebugs". We had not seen one before.
