This story is being entered by Brian Minor of the 大象传媒 GMR Action Desk on behalf of Doreen Quinton

I was born in Manchester and I was three when the war started. We had an air raid shelter in the garden and at our school where we had to go with our gas masks on. We had Mickey Mouse gas masks which I hated. During the war my family went to live in a cottage in Tintwisle.
I apparently slept through the air raids. We couldn't get any fruit or toffes or any eggs only powdered eggs. We had our first fruit in 1945 and that was a banana, and we also had a toffee for the first time too.
I remember the air raid sirens, once a doodle bug went over, that made a lot of noise and was very scary.
