During an air raid in 1941 a landmine demolished our local blocks of flats. I was sixteen at the time and all us teenagers used to play cards and get together and not go down the shelters.
This particular night some fifteen boys and girls were there. I went in too, but left after a row, going down to the shelter.
To my horror, after the raid, I realised 25 of my friends had been killed by the bombing.
After this my family evacuated to Lavenham in Suffolk to Grandma’s and a landmine, almost opposite the house in Bolton St., landed in the street and didn’t explode! It’s still displayed in the Guildhall!
