This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from East Grinstead on behalf of Edith Seal and has been added to the site with her permission. Edith Seal fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
It was 1942. I was 20 years old and volunteered for the ATS.
I went firstly to Aldershot and was then sent to Arborfield with others, to be trained as a telephonist. On arriving at Arborfield an ATS 1st Lieutenant Officer informed us that we were not to be trained as telephonists after all - but as "Gun Predictors". This involved being one of a group of six, calculating the angle of fire for Ack Ack gunners.
That Officer was in fact Mary Churchill - daughter of Winston Churchill!
We were then attached to 643 H.M. Ack Ack Battery.
After serving with units at Whitby, Newport, Liverpool, Shoreham, Gosport and Great Wakening I was demobilised from Nottingham Ordnance in 1946.
