We used to keep chickens up the garden, many people did during the war, we could have fresh eggs so they were very important to us. One night there was an airraid and the bombs were dropping very close to us. We could hear them getting closer but my mom said that we would be all right. I was a bit worried about the chickens but there was nothing we could do from our shelter under the stairs! Then there was an almighty bang, very close to us. As that one had been close we knew the next would be past our house so we were safe. The next morning I went up the garden to check the chickens and to feed them. But there was nothing left except a big hole! The bomb had obviously scored a direct hit on our poor little layers! I went running down to tell my mom. She thought for a moment and then shrugged and said that we could fill it with water and get some ducks. And this is just what we did!
