At the end of thge war, 5th may 1945, at mid-night an announcment that the war had ended was made from Downling street. At RAF Silverstone, the weekly community dance was taking place. After the announcment, the dance band led the whole Garrison and all who had atended the dance into the village, sing and dancing, until they had run out of song when they started singing MacNara's band. When the fun was stopped abruptly and the garrison marched back to the officers mess, marched over the table and were dismissed for bed. The next day after pay parade, everybody was given 48 hours leave before having to return to base.
