During the Blitz my brother Bert came home on short leave and brought a couple of bottles of wine with him. Due to the bombing we spent our nights under the table to give us shelter in case of masonary falling. This was because we had already been bombed out twice and knew what could happen. We drank the wine and were feeling quite mellow when my mother decided she wanted to use the toilet, so in spite of the aircraft above us and the guns firing at them Mum went upstairs to the toilet. The wine had slightly gone to her head and after a few moments of her going upstairs we could hear her calling. Fearing what migh have happened we rushed upstairs only to find Mum on her knees with her head down the toilet basin. Her words were a bit unclear because of her head being where it was but then we heard 'I've lost my teeth!'. We asked what she meant and she repeated it. The wine had affected her a little too much and in the process of getting rid of some of it her false teetch had fallen into the pan. Her plaintive cry of 'I cant get them out and I cant do without them!' caused us to look to each other to see who was to be the one to retrieve them! With a hurried decision we did just that and hurried downstairs dragging Mum along, all the while the air raid was still booming away.
