This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War website by Elliot and William, pupils from Teversham Primary School on behalf of George Russell and has been added to the site with his permission. He fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

I remember one day that several boys were playing in the fields. We saw a Stirling bomber from Oakington in the clouds with a Hurricane fighter practising shooting it down. Then we saw two large plumes of smoke on the ground over the hedges. We thought it was nearby but after running across several fields we realised they were not that close but were four miles away. The Hurricane had hit the Stirling and both crashed on the Washes at Earith and all the crew on both aircraft were killed. A plaque to this event has been erected near to the Earith sluice gates.
