During the War I remember an occasion when my Mother, brother and I set off in a single decker bus from Redcar to Hartlepool I would be five or six years old at the time.It was a family affair as my father was the driver. We did the journey during the blackout. He was a little apprehensive and stopped along the way to ask if we should turn back.We all said for him to carry on.
On reaching Hartlepool we got off the bus just in time to hear the sirens wailing and the drone of enemy aircraft. We were quite a way from our home so my mother ordered us to lie down on the pavement and cover our heads as quickly as we could. The scream of the bomb will live with me forever. It exploded a couple of streets away and the noise was deafening and the whole ground shook. When the all clear went,we made our way past where the bomb had exploded and realised it was the home of our Auntie that had been destroyed but thankfully she was out at the time but her two dogs weren't so fortunate.
