Our evacuee came on 20 July 1940 I was seven and she was five. She came the day after her birthday. And her sisters brought her and she sat down on the doorstep and cried for ages. My older sister picked her up and carried her around for a while. She was there for five years. This was a Sharperton, seven miles west of Rothbury, and the evacuee, Sylvia came from North Shields.

It was considered safer because we were out in the country.

I sent her a birthday card when she was seventy, this year and a Christmas card.
