During the war I worked at Prince Smith鈥檚 sharpening bayonets. Going in Prince Smith鈥檚, those big iron gates 鈥 they locked them 鈥 and everything was in darkness, and I can remember the Charge Hand used to say, 鈥淭he faster you go, the quicker the War鈥檚 over.鈥
I was married when I was nineteen, and we were just married five days when he was shipped abroad to an unknown destination and he was away three-and-a-half years, but six months before he got discharged, they had to dip out of a hat to come home on leave for a week or two, and of course that was lovely 鈥 the sad thing were when he went back. My husband was in the 1st Army, my brother were in the 8th Army.
My husband said that he was in these big trucks, that carry ammunition to the front line and he said he had to sleep on a sack of munitions in his wagon, and everything was in darkness and they had to drive at night 鈥 that was in Italy.
