My ealiest memory is walking to school with my gas mask in a cubic box hung round my shoulders. I was just 6 years old.
In class we had to check it for damage and practice putting it on correctly. Blow into it first to clear it, put your chin over the edge, pull it up over your face easing the straps over your head. The you had to blow out and it would go "RASP" as the rubber flapped against your cheek. This would check that the seal was good.
When the sirens went, we knew there were bombers coming over head to bomb factories near Manchester.
My aunt's husband was in the navy, my father was in the army. When we heard the sirens we went into our shelter and have a picnic. We ate and had cocoa at 2 or 3 am ! We had sweets so we really looked forward to the sirens. We just had a large torch light to see by.
On Saturday's we went to get our sweets ratio. We were allowed just 0.5lbs in weight. It wasn't much !
