The experience of being evacuated on September 1st 1939 shaped the rest of my life in a way that staying in London would not have been possible.
My parents were working people whereas, the people who received me into their family, were typical country folk who attended church once or twice on a Sunday plus other services that
happened on a weekday. The father of the family
was the choirmaster and church warden at St. Lukes, his wife and one daughter were responsible for the running of the Sunday school. The other daughter and her husband
sang in the choir and so did I.
I also rang the church bell which advised the congregation that a service was imminent
