When a lot of people "joined up" at this time of the War, it was found that a number needed additional tuition to a higher standard of education.
I was posted to Tooting (no3 PACT) and in those days we were billetted in private accommodation, near Steatham Common.
Our first interview with the introduced us to our Landladies.....who to our mind were "elderly". They showed us the levels of the house in Moring Road, ground floor, bedroom area and the attic. When looking at the lounge were were told that the table was indeed a Morrison shelter and to which two young budding RAF pilots to be were expected to spend the nights when the sirens sounded........indeed they never seemed to stop at that time of the blitz by buzz bombs etc.
We took one look at the shelter and then the 2 ladies and we both opted for the attic.....to stay there through thick and thin. We endured the anti-aircraft rockets that were stationed on Streatham Common, night after night and which shook everything from shelves etc............but we were "safe" from a fate worse than death, to our minds, from going down to the Morrison shelter.
