My 96 year old uncle Harry volunteered for the Army and was captured at Dunkirk.
He spent the war in various prisoner of war camps, was not recognised as a Jew (he was one of two in his camp) and was even taken to Berlin to meet Lord HawHaw as a prospective broadcaster of propaganda - naturally he did not jump at the opportunity. His greatest fear was that HawHaw, who knew Leeds (his home town) might recognise his address as being in the Jewish area. When the Russians began their invasion Harry and other inmates walked out of the camp and escaped - with the help of nuns - via Warsaw and Odessa.
After the war he returned to Germany and served with the Control Commision. He is the best teller of his story and I have several tapes of his experiences.
