This story was told by his surviving sister, Dolly Rawlins.

Billy was taken prisoner when he was about twenty. He was in the Royal Artillery, and was captured in Java.
His head was shaved. He helped in the canteen, and survived on the scraps. He was nearly shot when they found he had stolen a potato.
When he was very low, it was believed that he was dead. He was put in a body bag and thrown in the sea. Luckily someone spotted a movement and he was saved.
He was taken to Canada after the war to be built up. He died in 2002 at the age of 80.
