It was the social life of the town, harvest time.

Now it鈥檚 done anonymously by a combine harvester and you don鈥檛 see anybody about, but as youngsters, we would all go up with our sticks and it was a day out.

We would also go gleaning afterwards and pick up a lot of grain to feed the chickens. Chickens were a luxury food, though, kept for special occasions.

In the lead up to Christmas time, you would hear all the cockerels in the morning and then after Christmas it would be very quiet!
