There was an air raid shelter in the back lane which everyone in the street used.Marys husband Robert worked in a factory but was called up to the army to help in the medical call.He spent most of his time during the war helping in hospitals in Berma.Mary was left at home to look after there 3 week old baby.Mary thought she heard sirens which meant an air raid was on its way so she grabbed the bottle for the baby and headed for the shelter.She sat and she sat and nobody else came, she was very frightened and scared.It was the middle of the night and it was dark but she could not sleep.
Mary saw daylight so left the shelter and headed back for home.The air raid warden lived opposite Mary and saw her as she was leaving the shelter.He said "Mary what were you doing in the shelter at this time in the morning?"she replied "Well im waiting for the all clear." he then said "but Mary there hasn't been an air raid the sirens had never sounded!" He helped her into the house with the baby and made sure everything was alright.Mary had been sitting in the shelter all night frightened when there hadn't been an air raid at all.
