This story was submitted to the People's War site by Jess from Swavesey Village College on behalf of Ruth Hill and has been added to the site with her permission. Ruth fully understands the sites terms and conditions.
I remember one night when I was on night duty; I was on the phone in the passage just outside the ward when one of the patients called out "Duck nurse!" I did and a piece of shrapnel hit my tin hat on my head. If he hadn't called, it would have gone through my body. I kept the dented tin hat and the shrapnel five to six inches long but I don't have it now.
