During the War I would travel quite often to visit Aunt Ina and her family in Edinburgh as they were the closest relatives as my family were back home in Canada. To get there I would travel by train which were blacked out. Also they were very very crowed and I had to sit on the floor in the corridor often and sometimes we could only stand, packed like sardines. We did have to have a pass to get off the air base and it would need a 48 hour pass to get to Edinburgh to visit.
We did not drive not only because we did not have a car, but also because we did not have a driver's license. Sometimes we would borrow a bicycle to go to Thrisk, the nearby town, but usually we got a ride in the base truck.
Yes, we had ration books but they were very limited because we got most of our food in the mess on the air base.
No, I was not in the battle of Britain as I was still training at that time so hadn't gotten to fly into danger yet.
