This story was submitted to the People's War website by a volunteer on behalf of Mr Noakes and has been added to the site with his permission. Mr Noakes fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was in a Navy convoy for six years. Our first trip was from Grenock to Gibralta and I remember having to pick up Merchant Navy soldiers after their ship was torpedoed. Some of them had horrible injuries and I don't like to think about it now.

I was at the fall of Singapore and also traveled to Java and Batvia as it was then called. I also went to Australia- a journey which took three weeks with only boiled rice for us to eat!

At the end of the war I was part of a group of core vet ships which swept the North Atlantic for German submarines. We were positioned 10 miles apart and covered the whole sea in three weeks.
