I was at school when war broke out, aged about 10 or 11 years old.
I remember when they brought the air raid shelter round and my father said it was a waste of time digging it under the ground, so it stayed above the ground.
We did use it.
My dad didn't though - he stood in the doorway of our house.
When they bombed Coventry a piece of shrapnal cam ethrough the guttering and just missed him.
