My name is Sarah Potter and I work at Marden High School North Shields, Tyne & Wear. This is a story that had been related to my husband by his late father Raymond Hammet Potter about the day his ship was sunk during world war two.

It was during May 1942 when the Effingham was struck by a submerged rock and began sinking. According to my father-in-law the reason the ship hit the rock in the first instance was the fact that the pilot who was guiding her through the harbour was in fact a German sympathiser or as he called him a Quisling.

As the Effingham floundered several ships in the area took off the crew and to his knowledge only one sailor lost his life.
