This story has been submitted to the People’s War website by Peter Quinn of the Lancs Home Guard on behalf of Margaret Brown and has been added to the site with her permission…
Between 1940 and 1944, I was a lathe operator, making washers, in Vickers Armstrong Submarine Works in Barrow. We worked three shifts in rotation so that the machine never stopped. What particularly annoyed us girls was that the men doing the same job were paid 25% more than us. Without warning I was laid off and instructed to report to the Royal Ordinance Factory in Chorley, Lancs. Unfortunately, this meant I couldn’t live at home and had to move to a hostel near Warrington.
I also remember my mum saying someone in the shopping queue said, ”God doesn’t make people to be bombed”. And she replied, ”Well, God didn’t make me then because I’ve been bombed!”
