Joan Wilson was a friend of the family. When I was 4 years old she used to take me out in my pushchair for a walk. During the build up to D-Day in 1944 the American Forces were pouring through Liverpool. An American friend of Joan asked if she would like to go to the Pictures, the Grand Cinema on Smithdown Road, and she said yes. The American ased "Is this your little lad?" when he saw me. "No" she said "I'm just looking after him". Joan asked if I could come along too and he said yes.
Late that afternoon waiting on Smithdown Road on the waste ground caused by a landmine in 1941, a Sherman Tank drove up to us which took us by surprise! Joan's American friend had arrived in a Tank to take us to the Pictures.
I'll never forget that ride along Smithdown Road in a Sherman Tank with my head sticking out of the top of the turret.
When we reached the cinema we got out and saw the film "Theirs the glory". This was about the Arnhem Landings. It took me nearly 60 years before I found out which film it was.
