We used to live near Rotherham. My father, Harry, was a builder and put tiles on people's roofs. I was only 9 years old when the war broke out. We built an anderson shelter in the garden, dug a big hole, and used to live in that when the raids were on.

My father was the air raid warden or fire warden or something. We had a stirrup pump in the house and we used to play at squirting about. When there was a raid on he used to disappear and patrol outside looking for incendiary bombs but thats really all I remember of it.

I remember being scared stiff when the dropped bombs on, I think it was, Park Gate Iron and Steel Company. All I could think about was 'please let them keep going. Don't stop here.'
