My mother used to encourage me to collect savings stamps during the war. My Grandmother always gave me sixpence every time I saw her and I always bought a savings stamp, and stuck this in a book. It was a great thing to fill a page in the book, and then the whole book.
One day we went into Liverpool Town Centre and there were lots of blocks of buildings that had been turned into bombed sites and just been flattened.
On this day we went to town, there were several tanks and army lorries parked on one of these bomb sites, and they were covered in savings stamps. My mother encouraged me to stick my savings stamp onto the tank instead of inside of my book.
I was appalled at this and could not understand why I should do that! I did as my mother told me though and she told me I'd done a very good thing.
