Second Love Letter
In one hand, gas mask. 鈥淵es Mum.鈥 In the other, sandwiches. 鈥淵es Mum, I鈥檒l remember.鈥
and I did:
Humble sandwich, forgive me.
I didn't understand the depth of your message, 'til almost too late.
I thought you were just a lunch.
Now I realise.
It all makes sense now:
the fullness, the reassuringly heavy weight
the crisp fresh new greaseproof paper, carefully folded, in a brown paper bag,
and inside -
the fresh soft conforming comforting body of soft, white, sweet, bread.
the cheese and tomato - food and drink:
the real meaning of trans-substantiation
My Mum dreams:
"Take this - this is my body, this is my milk - take this in remembrance of my love." It will protect you and succour you wherever you go in the world .
I was loved, I am loved, I will be loved
and so the tenses fuse for ever on my way to school.
Miracle, you are called 'just a sandwich'
but now, at least, I, have the truth.
1 - Freud also had this belief I found out later, but he did not relate this concept through sandwiches!
