My First Days of Life
I was born in Balham South, West London on 3rd October 1940. In those days the norm was for a home birth.
Apparently when I was three days old a double decker bus went down either Clapham North or Clapham South underground station, I don鈥檛 know which, and my mother was shot out of bed and across the room with me in her arms which must have been very frightening for a new mum and her baby.
My father was in the Fire Service at that time and had to go down in a boat to rescue the people who were in trouble from the burst sewers.
As they used to play cards in the air raid shelter, I was called after a game of cards known as 鈥淣ap鈥 hence the name of Nanette Anthea Palmer. Over the years people have shortened it to Anne or Annie.
