I was 6 when war broke out and living in Luton. In the Summer of 1940, when invasion was imminent, some members of the local Jewish community became very nervous of their fate and started practicing committing suicide using their gas ovens. Sadly some of them accidentally succeeded.
At the same time, due to the threat of invasion, you could purchase a bungalow on the South Coast of England for just 拢5.
