At the start of the war I lived in Luton, Bedfordshire and was 7 years old. I stayed with my Granny in the street next to the Gas Works. As Vauxhall works was taken over to make Churchill Tanks Luton was well up on the bombing list of German Aircraft and we had night after night of bombing. My gran and I were sent away to Grimethorpe near Barnsley, Yorkshire where the war seemed a million miles away.
On VE Day I remember my gran being very excited and told me everything would soon be back to normal, my dad would be out of the RAF and all my aunts and uncles would be back home. One of my aunts was in the WAAFS and another was a Land Girl. What sticks in my memory id not the VE Day itself, with everyone dancing in the street giving out free shandies, but the firs time me gran had us altogether as a family, all but one safe and well.
