my memories as a young boy were as follows i remember the war starting, my parents were very worried as my dad may be elegible to join the forces, but we later found out that as a miner he was exempt from the armed forces.but
he thought he would like to do his bit for his country and joined the home gaurd i remember him coming home one Sunday morning with his rifle and uniform i remember trying to pick up his rifle to my shoulder but I was unable to because it was so heavy, after the Germans started to bomb Coventry my dad and his friend decided that to protect their families they decided to build a shelter at the bottom of the garden ,when the sirens went to warn people the German bombers were coming we used to go into the shelter with various items to keep our minds off the bombing which was very hard as the noise was quite deafening at times we always had oil lamps in the shelter as the children were frightened of the dark we also had beds inside so we could all go to sleep whenever we felt tired there was always plenty of water available as we had a small primus stove if anyone wanted a hot drink we used to try and guess what sort of plane was flying above ua as the night went on according to the noise of the engine, and we would listen to the bombs dropping over Coventry and Birmingham when the sirens went for the all clear we used to come out of the air raid shelter and look towards Birmingham and see the flames from the buildings that had been bombed that night it was quite frightening to think we were so close to being anihilated so suddenly
