Observation Post Officers, or OP Officers for short, are a group of people who are sent out ahead of the troop of gunners to seek out the enemy position, so that they can tell the gunners where to point their weapons.
We were in Italy, and the OP Officers were observing from the ridge of a hill. An OP Officer climbed up to the top of the hill, wearing a belt that was carrying a revolver, some ammunition, a compass, a pair of binoculars and a map which had their positions marked on it. He popped his head over the top of the ridge and came face to face with a German Officer doing exactly the same thing. The startled officers turned and ran down the different sides of the hill. The OP Officer was weighed down by all of the things on his belt,so he threw the belt along with everything that was attached to it over his shoulder, and carried on running. We had to send out an infantry patrol to retrieve the belt, because if the Germans had found the map they would have known our positions.
