I was told this story by an elderly gentleman whilst carring out bulding work to his home, he was reluctant to tell it but I gained his confidence and he told it to me quietly over an extended tea break one warm afternoon. I feel it needs to be passed on.
He was part of a unit that where between the Germans and the retreating allied forces that were heading for Dunkirk. It was their job to slow the German advance by whatever means possible to give the best chance for escape.
When they arrived at the beach it was empty and the Germans were not far behind ,their brief was in this event to head south to spain.
They did this with some sucess, moving at night, foraging for food and on occasion illimateing anyone who discovered them.
They found an isolated farmhouse where they discovered by an old farmer who with much gestering and smiling invited them to come out from their cover and eat. They did and soon forgot what they were up to. Then while they slept it would seem that the farmer had turned them in to the Germans.
They were taken away,,guestioned as you would expect, then put on a train. Eventually then ended up in a prison camp in Poland, where they spent the next few years.
One morning they awoke to find that the guards had gone and everthing was in caous. He and a few of his commrades decided to make a run for it. So, garthering up what little they had they left the camp.
After awhile ,hours, maybe days they ran into the Russans. With much shouting and manhandling they were lined up at the side of a barn, all had their hands up and through all the commotion they realised that they were about to be shot. The Russians were shouting, they were shouting and one young soldier stood in front of them with a machine gun, he pointed it at them and it jammed. During that little pause another of the Russians recognised the name Winston Churchhill being shouted by one of the group and called a halt to the proceedings. Then everthing clamed down and through signing and various means everything got explained. The Russians brought them up to date how the war was going, told them where the allied forces were, shared some rations and some small arms with them and sent them on their way.
Sometime later they managed to get back to allied lines and after a short break reunited with or placed into new units. The story teller then with his new unit eventually walked into Berlin with I am sure, more than a tale to tell.
