My father was stationed at South Witham as a Radio Operator and he had a marvellous time. He used to repair the local peoples radios and had plenty to eat. After the end of the War he had acquired(!) a lot of radio equipment and we had one of the first televisions in the Midlands. While he was enjoying himself my mother and two sisters had a very hard time. In fact we did not have any fruit for years just stodgy food to fill us. Living in the Black Country was dangerous with bombers coming over most nights particularly on moonlit nights when they followed the canal at the end of our garden. When my father in home on leave he would take my mother out on jobs repairing radios and I being the eldest by 13 months had to look after my two sisters even in bombing raids. I was born in 1935 so you can see I was not very old to have such a responsibility. Even now after 65 years I am still nervous when 'planes go over head!
