This story was submitted to the People鈥檚 War site by Elizabeth Perez of Stockport Libraries on behalf of "Joy" and has been added to the site with her permission. She fully understands the site鈥檚 terms and conditions.

During the food shortages in the Second World War, my Father decided to buy some hens, hoping the eggs they would lay would augment our small rations. A hen house was duly purchased together with a small number of hens. They duly provided hoped-for additions to our menu. All went well until one of the hens seemed to have a cold, coughing and sneezing and causing consternation. My father decided that the hen should be dosed with "Fennings Fever Cure" (a favourite cure-all of the day). Amazingly, after a few doses, the hen recovered and continued to lay eggs almost daily.
